Chapter Twenty-Three

October 21

It wasn’t that Lilly wasn’t used to being chauffeured around at times. Mom and Dad often hired cars when they were in unfamiliar cities, or when they needed the drive time for memorizing lines or studying financials. But riding in the backseat with two bodyguards in the front only reinforced the feeling that she was “the package” to be safely delivered. She could have been a briefcase for all the conversation she got out of the two men. Her life now was a thriller when she longed for a romantic comedy.

Lilly reached to open the door as soon as the SUV pulled up to Alexandra’s studio. The sooner she got out of here—

“Please wait until we secure the area, ma’am,” Doug said, extending his arm between the seats like she was a toddler needing restraint.

Lilly choked down a laugh, but couldn’t restrain her smile as the two men climbed out and stood behind their doors while their eyes searched the alley and roofs. As serious as this all was, she couldn’t help feel she’d been dropped into a Mission Impossible movie. Tom Cruise could show up any minute. Maybe he’d be her sparring partner? He was in pretty good shape. Could she take him?

Doug, apparently satisfied, opened her door and stood back, using his body and the vehicle door as a short alley to the building. The door of Alexandra’s studio opened before Lilly reached it.

“Lilly Hawthorne?”

A woman Lilly had never seen swung the studio door open and Lilly walked through. She was taller than Lilly, and dressed in black cargos and a stretchy sleeveless camo top that showed off toned arms and restrained curves. It had the aura of a uniform, but there was no insignia anywhere. Her skin was a gorgeous coppery tan that made Lilly immediately envious. No spray tan here.

“For now,” Lilly said, and watched the woman’s brows furrow. Her eyes flicked to Fin, who had followed them inside.

He shrugged a response.

“I’m changing it soon,” Lilly clarified.

“Good for you,” the woman said after a beat. “Speaking of change, what do you think, Fin?” she said, touching her hair and turning her head.

The left side of her head was buzzed short, and the right side was long enough to curl past her chin. Deep red highlights sliced through dark amber, complimenting her skin color.

Fin scratched his chin for a moment, then shook his head. “Nope. I couldn’t pull it off, Stone. Make me look too emo.”

“It would!” the woman barked. They both laughed, and it was the first sign of personality Lilly had seen in Fin. Judgment was still out on Doug, who was parking the car. The small laugh lines at the corners of the woman’s eyes pegged her near thirty.

“Sorry, Lilly, inside joke. I’m always trying to get Fin to loosen up, but it’s hopeless.” She held out her hand. “I’m Kris Stone. We’re all part of Omron International, your security team.”

Fin maintained a position by the front door as Kris accompanied Lilly to the locker room in back.
